Chapter 23: Infant Wolf

The rubble exploded. From it shot a figure of light high into the sky. Its very presence caused the temperature to skyrocket in seconds.

Ren looked up, his eyes fixed on the figure that was there. He held intrigue and shock behind his eyes, never expecting what he was seeing.

"He is not done?" he muttered, a question to no one.

The figure in the sky was Ash. His entire body was covered in flames, flames so intense they made the air dance with heatwaves. His chest heaved up and down heavily from under all that flame, his fists clenched tight, as if letting go would cause some danger.

"Are you going to stay in the air there, or will you attack?" Ren asked, his tone laced in order to piss Ash off. It worked.

"Arghghhhhhh!" Ash roared. Heatwaves exploded from his body. They caused the dried twigs on the ground to be set ablaze. He pressed his foot against the air and shot down. His speed caused the air to bend and a sonic boom to rip through the air.

He was eager, desperate to kill the dragon. Ren could see it in his eyes.

Ren shot into the air at the last moment. He escaped the attack barely. The fist slammed into the ground, a crater formed in an instant, and debris shot all around.

Ren made a loop in the air fast. His claws dug into the back of Ash. The heat was intense, but he was a dragon. His scales defended him from things like heat. He pulled Ash into the air fast. Each flap of his wings sent him higher very fast.

"Let go!" Ash roared and tried to attack, but Ren let him go, then turned to face him fast. He unleashed a sonic roar right there at close range, one as powerful as the last one. It slammed into Ash as hard as a brick wall. It sent Ash plummeting. The flames that covered his body dispersed in seconds as he slammed into the ground hard.

"That’s enough," Ren declared and followed that with an Ember Breath. The flames ripped through the air and slammed into Ash, who was on the ground. His screams were muffled by the roar of the flames. When it was over, Ren flew down.

He landed on the ground beside Ash.

Ash had been burned so badly that he had become unrecognizable.

"You should have left when you had the chance," Ren said in a calm manner. Ash was too battered to even speak.

"Let’s put you out of your misery," Ren said and walked close.

"Stop!" A thundering voice came through the air, followed by a sword that was hurled at so much speed it became a blur.

Ren moved back, and the sword went past, stabbing into the ground and blasting it open.

Ren turned his head to look at the new guests. It was the other teachers, the three of them, but that was not what pulled his attention, because in the hands of one of them, the one that had thrown the sword, Brogan, was the very little wolf that Ren had played with before his evolution.

"What- what are you doing with him?" Ren roared in pure rage.

"Haha, this little one?" Brogan said. "After we heard what you told our students, we knew you wanted to protect your forest or family. Weird for a dragon to want that, but whatever.

"So we had Selene here use a long-range mind control spell. The best she could get was this infant wolf, and then brought him here. But from the way you reacted, we can tell that it’s important.

"We needed a bargaining chip, and we have it. Hand over our comrade, and you can have the wolf back," Brogan explained with a confident smile.

’Shit,’ Ren cursed in his mind. He did not know such a situation would come. He grabbed Ash by the feet and raised him into the air for them to see.

"He is still alive," he said before hurling Ash. Cassian stepped forward and grabbed Ash, not letting him hit the ground.

"Now let go of the wolf," Ren said.

"Haha, no, not after what you did to our comrade. You deserve to suffer as much as we have. NOW, HEADMASTER!" Brogan yelled.

From above, before Ren could react, a powerful gravitational force surged down. It slammed into him so hard that a crater was formed on the ground, and Ren was flattened under it.

"Arghhhhhh!" Ren struggled to even move.

"Screw you!" he roared in anger. He looked at Brogan. He had a smile on his face, and the wolf was still in his hands.

"Haha, you did well, dragon, but you went against humans," Brogan said, and right before Ren, he grabbed the wolf by the neck and began squeezing.

"Brogan, we don’t have to do that anymore. Let the pup go," Cassian said.

"No, this dragon hurt Ash. He deserves a bit more pain." As he said those words, he began to squeeze the neck of the wolf tighter.

The wolf began whimpering in pain, crying as loud as it could. Brogan had a smile the more the wolf cried.

"No! STOP IT!" Ren roared. He looked up and began pushing himself up with all that he had. His bones started popping right there, loud and resounding.

Brogan did not stop. Ren could see the life leaving the eyes of the wolf. His rage grew. He pushed himself to his feet with all the strength that he could and defied the gravity. From under his scales, blood began gushing out, but he refused to be kept down. But before he could make his next move, Brogan snapped the head of the wolf clean off, in two places, and allowed the body to fall to the ground.

Ren watched it fall. His eyesight slowly turned red. He did not know if it was blood or something else, but all of it was red now. His breathing got heavy, so heavy that it could be heard from a distance.
