Chapter 17: Weird Dragon

When the group of students saw the eyes in the tree, they all froze.

"What the heck is that?" one asked. He pointed at the tree for all to see, like they had not already seen the glowing eyes that were there.

"Some sort of lizard monster?" one suggested, the best thing that came to mind.

"Wait, did it speak? Whatever it is," one pointed out. Only then did it sink into their minds that those eyes had somehow spoken.

"It does not matter what it is. I’ll take it down." The leader of the group stepped forward. He brought his palms together, and a stream of flames formed like a twisted vortex.

"I do like the fact you want to attack, but if those flames leave your hands, you won’t have hands anymore." The voice cut through the air, this time even more menacing. It carried a certain aura to it that caused them to fear.

The leader gritted his teeth when he heard it. He could choose to back down, or he could attack, not knowing what was there and if it was strong enough to actually back its words.

"Show yourself, whatever you are, before I take you down," he spoke big again. He needed to look big before his friends.

"Sigh, such proud words from someone who’s so insecure about status and talent that they had to attack someone else and use status to beat him.

"Have you ever wondered what you are without the canopy that is your family? Nobles use it like they earned it, when in reality someone else did so a long time ago, and now all you do is leech off the goodness of their efforts." As he said those words, he spread his wings and flew off the branch, landing on the ground and slowly entering the light.

When all of them saw what it was, they all wanted to start laughing at the fact that it was some small lizard monster, but then they saw him fully, and instantly the words stuck in their throats.

"Dr-dragon!" one yelled. He stepped back from an instinctive fear.

"What the hell is a dragon doing here?" another one asked.

Luka managed to lift his head. He saw Ren standing there, and shock filled his eyes. He had never seen a dragon in real life. They were rare and did well to ensure no one saw or knew about them easily.

"Arghhhhh, what the heck are you guys worried about? I know it’s a dragon, but it’s an infant. There is no way that it’s strong enough to deal with us," he said. A sudden greed formed in his eyes.

"If anything, I feel it’s something we can capture right now. Imagine what we would gain if we sold a whole dragon." He looked at Ren with greed. His words seemed to reach and scratch the itch in the minds of his followers.

They all fanned out and tried to encircle Ren. Their hunger for fortune reached its peak in seconds as they now wanted to get him desperately.

"Eh? How did we come to this? Are you dumb? All of you are infant humans, basically, and you think you can take on the infant of the top race in the world? You must be smoking some dried-up tree bark," Ren said in amusement.

The leader didn’t respond. Rather, he used the flame attack he had done before to unleash a fireball right at Ren.

"Tch."

"RAWRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!"

Ren unleashed a sonic roar. The blast ripped through the air fast and heavy. It was so loud that even those who were not the target of the attack felt their eardrums tremble.

The roar slammed into the leader with so much force that he was lifted off the ground and hurled into a tree.

BAM!

He coughed up so much blood and then dropped to the ground, vomiting another mouthful of blood. He groaned in a lot of pain. He could not even move.

The others watched in horror. Their bodies refused to move after that. Their feet were stuck to the ground.

"Seriously, what did you all expect? I am a flipping dragon. You are academy babies." Ren said and then turned to look at the rest.

"Listen to me. Head back to your camp and tell your teachers to leave the forest now and do not try to hunt any monsters here, else there will be deaths amongst you.

"I will not allow you to harm the hair of even one of my monsters, so you either leave or I force you to leave in blood and tears, and probably a few shattered bones." He stated his stance clearly for all of them to hear.

The boys stepped back as he looked at them, scared that they would be the next ones he attacked.

"Do you understand me?" he barked.

"Yes, yes," a few managed to say.

"Then get your idiot of a friend and leave here now."

They ran and carried their leader, dragging him away in fear. They had seen death almost take them, and that was enough to change their entire view on life.

Ren looked up and then saw Dawn trying to get Luka up. She felt his gaze and then looked up. He could tell that there was worry and some fear in her.

"You do not have to fear. You are pretty good in my books. You stood for someone of lesser privilege and tried to fight for him," Ren said.

"I’d suggest that if your teachers choose to be stubborn and refuse to listen, then you better not join the attack. I will be killing anyone who joins the attack, child or grown-up. No one touches my family or any monster here."

When he was done, he flapped his wings and shot into the air, leaving them there.

"That was a real-life dragon," Luka managed to mutter weakly.

"Yeah, a weird one as well," Dawn replied. She looked up, but Ren had vanished.
