ALEXANDER

The cave was still breathing, that was the worst part. Not the goblins, not the glowing runes crawling along the stone like veins, not even the sword in my hand quietly arguing with reality. It was the feeling that the dungeon had stopped being a place and started being an opinion.

"Hostile forge presence increasing." The sword murmured inside my head.

"Yeah." I whispered. "I noticed."

Scarlet stepped closer, her light dimmer now, like even her aura didn’t want to attract attention here.

"Master, the structure is shifting again."Scarlet said and grinned.

"We are no longer in a stable layout."Noa’s eyes narrowed.

"This is activation."Zavier didn’t move, but his voice came out lower than before.

I opened my mouth to ask what that meant, I didn’t get the chance I heard a ’DING’. I froze.

"No." I said immediately. "Not now."

"SYSTEM NOTICE: DAILY TASK ASSIGNED."A translucent screen slammed into my vision anyway.

"Are you kidding me."I stared at it.

"OBJECTIVE: DESCEND TO THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE DUNGEON."The message expanded.

Then I slowly looked around.

"That’s it?"I asked.

"No."The sword answered instantly.

"What do you mean ’no’?"I frowned.

"REWARD: SURVIVAL COMPATIBILITY IMPROVEMENT."The system continued.

"That sounds like a threat."Scarlet blinked.

"It is phrased like one."Noa nodded once.

"That is not a normal system directive."Zavier’s eyes narrowed sharply.

"I don’t care what kind of directive it is, I am not just walking deeper into mystery murder

cave because it said so."I pointed at the floating screen.

"DUNGEON ALIGNMENT INITIATED."The system said.

"I didn’t agree to that part."The ground under my feet trembled.

"LOCKING USER POSITION."The system said.

"Wait?"I froze.

The sword went very quiet. That was worse than anything it had said so far, then it spoke.

"Brace."The system said.

The world dropped, not collapsed, not exploded. Like the entire cave decided gravity was optional for me specifically.

"Master-!"Scarlet reached out.

"Interception-!"Noa moved instantly.

Zavier stepped forward too late. The floor beneath me vanished, and I fell. Air screamed past my ears as stone turned into blurred streaks above me.

"DESCENT CONFIRMED."The sword pulsed violently in my grip. "THIS IS NOT A DESCENT THIS IS A FALL. LOWEST FLOOR TARGET ACQUIRED. WHO PROGRAMMED THIS?!"

"MASTER!"Scarlet’s voice echoed faintly from above.

"Trajectory unstable!"Noa’s voice followed immediately after.

"So it chose him."Zavier’s voice was quieter.

Then silence swallowed everything except wind and falling stone. I hit something. Not ground, a barrier. Light exploded outward, my vision flickered. Then impact. I landed hard, rolling across black stone that was too smooth to be natural. Everything shook as the air down here felt different. Like it had been waiting longer than anything alive should be allowed to wait. I groaned.

"Okay." I muttered, pushing myself up. "New rule. I hate systems."

"DING."The system rung again.

"STOP TALKING TO ME."I pointed upward immediately.

"OBJECTIVE UPDATE: BOSS FLOOR DETECTED." The system said.

"Boss floor?"I froze.

"Correct."The sword in my hand spoke softly.

"You knew about this."I said.

"Yes."The sword said.

"WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY ANYTHING?!" I gasped.

"I did not have full confirmation."The sword said. "Now I do."

The darkness ahead of me shifted, not like movement. Like awareness opening its eyes. Somewhere far in the distance metal rang once. Like a hammer hitting an anvil that had never cooled. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

"Master’s life signature disappeared from upper level."Scarlet’s voice finally echoed from far above, faint but sharp.

"He has been relocated."Noa added.

"So it has chosen him directly."Zavier said.

"I am going to assume that’s bad."I stared into the dark hallway in front of me.

"Yes."The sword answered instantly. "You are on the Forge inheritance’s lowest trial layer."

"And the boss?"I swallowed.

The sword hummed once. It felt almost like it was listening to something else now.

"It is awake."The sword said.

The ground under me trembled again. Far ahead, something moved closer, slow, like it had all the time in the world, and I suddenly understood something very clearly. The goblins were never the problem, they were just the entrance fee. The sound came first, not footsteps, not breathing. Chains, heavy, slow, dragging across stone somewhere deep in the dark ahead.

"Nope."My entire body locked up instantly.

"Threat approaching."The sword in my hand pulsed once.

"I KNOW THAT."I said.

The darkness ahead shifted again, not movement, shape. Like something enormous was unfolding itself from inside the cave walls, the temperature dropped so fast my breath fogged in front of me, then a single eye opened in the dark. Watching me directly, every survival instinct in my body immediately started screaming.

"Okay." I whispered carefully. "I officially regret every life choice."

The chains dragged again, closer, the eye blinked once, then another eye opened beside it. Higher, much higher, my neck slowly tilted upward, and upward, and upward.

"That is WAY too tall."I said.

"Confirmed: Forge Guardian."The sword in my head spoke immediately.

"THAT DOESN’T HELP!"I screamed.

The darkness peeled away from the thing standing ahead, armor, not worn armor, attached armor. Black metal fused directly into flesh like someone forged a knight and forgot to stop.

Its body was massive, easily three times taller than me, chains wrapped around its arms and torso. Molten cracks pulsed faintly beneath the metal plating like lava trapped under skin and in the center of its chest a forge burned. An actual forge, a furnace heart glowing inside its ribcage. I took one step backward automatically, the thing noticed, the chains stopped moving.

"Do not let it touch you."Then the sword in my hand whispered.

"THAT SOUNDS IMPORTANT."I said.

The giant slowly lowered its head toward me. Its eyes burned brighter. Then it spoke.

"Inheritance candidate."But the entire dungeon shook anyway.

"Nope."I froze solid.

"Weapon synchronization confirmed."The forge inside its chest flared.

The sword in my hand vibrated violently.

"Why are YOU reacting?!"I stared at it.

"Recognition protocol active."The sword said.

"What does that mean?!"I screamed.

The giant took one step forward.

"I would like to formally decline whatever this is."I said.

Its eyes stayed locked on the sword then on me.

"Weak."The giant ignored me completely.

"Excuse me?"I blinked.

"Unworthy."The chains around its arms tightened.

"Okay wow, rude."Something inside me twitched immediately.

"It is evaluating you."The sword in my head spoke calmly.

"I DIDN’T ASK TO BE EVALUATED." The forge guardian slowly raised one massive arm, heat exploded outward.

"STOP APPEARING DURING TRAUMA."I screamed.

"TRIAL COMMENCING."The system said.

"No."I said.

"OBJECTIVE UPDATED."The system said.

"I SAID NO."I said.

"SURVIVE."The system said.

The guardian moved fast, wAY too fast. The entire floor shattered as the giant disappeared from where it stood.

"OH THAT’S BAD."My eyes widened.

"DODGE."The sword screamed inside my head.

I threw myself sideways. A massive fist slammed into the ground where I had been standing half a second earlier. The impact split the boss floor apart, and shockwaves blasted through the cavern.

"WHY IS IT SO FAST?!"I hit the stone hard and rolled desperately.

"Because it is not incomplete."The sword said.

"THAT ANSWER CREATED MORE QUESTIONS."I said angrily.

The guardian turned toward me slowly. Its furnace heart burned brighter. I knew at that moment that I had to do something or I might die.
