Chapter 21: Another mission

’’An Orc?’’ The female guild receptionist widened her eyes in bewilderment upon receiving the report from the village.

She immediately bowed her head to the players standing in front of her and spoke with a remorseful expression.

’’On behalf of the Adventurer Guild, I sincerely apologize for incorrectly assessing this mission. We will properly compensate all of you.’’

Some players clicked their tongues in annoyance.

’’You should.’’

After that, Vyral received a total of 100 copper coins. He gazed at the coins resting in his palm. Although he couldn’t buy many useful things in the game with this amount, it was a different story in the real world.

The coins could be converted into real-world currency.

One copper coin was worth around 10 dollars. So, with 100 copper coins, he would have around 1,000 dollars. It was a huge amount of money in the real world, especially for scavengers like him.

Vyral nodded to himself before asking the female guild receptionist for another mission.

After a few minutes of checking the list, she offered him a mission at the Undead Cemetery. Vyral carefully read the information on the paper while the female receptionist spoke with a smile on her red lips.

’’You don’t need to worry about this mission, Adventurer Vyral. With your achievement of killing an Orc, those undeads are nothing to you.’’ freeweɓnovel.cøm

Vyral simply ignored the compliment and continued reading the paper. However, another adventurer nearby didn’t.

A hint of jealousy flashed across his eyes.

’’Tch. Just one Orc. I bet you’d piss yourself if you had to face a horde of Orcs.’’

The female receptionist grimaced.

’’Richard, is it really that hard for you to acknowledge someone else’s achievement?’’

Richard spat in fury.

’’And you. Even though We’ve been a couple for three years, you’ve never praised me. Yet now you’re staring at that green shorty as if you’re going to sleep with him tonight. Huh?’’

One side of Vyral’s brow rose when a sound rang out in his ears. He stared at the virtual screen in front of him.

[You have received a mission from Adventurer Richard]

[Description]: Assist Richard in dealing with the Orcs that have been rampaging through nearby villages recently.

[Reward]:

. An item from the Orc

. Acknowledge from NPC Richard

. 100 xp.

[Penalty]:

. You will be humiliated by Richard.

Vyral frowned. He had never expected to receive a mission this way. Well, whatever. He was going to take it anyway—it sounded quite fun.

He glanced at the bickering couple and cut in.

’’Hey, dude. I’ll come with you to clean up that horde of Orcs.’’

Richard blinked several times in surprise before grinning. He shrugged.

’’Good spirit, Otherworlder. Just don’t expect me to save your ass if things go south.’’

Vyral and Richard’s group quickly headed toward the village. Richard led them into the forest behind it, where the Orcs’ lair was hidden.

A few hours later, they finally found it—an open area deep within the forest. Unfortunately, one of Richard’s group members accidentally made a noise, immediately drawing the monsters’ attention.

’’Watch out, everyone!’’ Richard yelled, gesturing for everyone to form up.

The first Orc roared and charged at them. It slammed into an NPC with its massive shoulder, sending him flying. Behind it, many more Orcs rushed toward them.

Vyral stood behind the group and immediately realized how bad the situation was. The number of Orcs had already exceeded their expectations. Now, they had no choice but to adapt.

Vyral quickly summoned the evolution list.

Mystic Energy: 5.52

[Block (Rank F) Lv.1] – 5 Mystic Energy

Raise your weapon to block an incoming attack, reducing damage down to 40%

[Deflect (Rank F) Lv.1] – 7 Mystic Energy

Deflect an incoming attack with precise timing, reducing damage down to 5% and slightly disrupting the attacker’s balance.

Vyral frowned in irritation. Even if he had killed a lot of goblins, and with the passive Mystic Energy from the item, it still hadn’t lived up to his expectations.

But he had no choice. He closed the virtual screen and began fighting with everything he had.

He weaved through the Orcs thanks to his short build before performing a series of combos.

He used [Combo Slash] to create an opening, then followed up with [Thrust].

His sharp sword easily pierced through the enemy’s head, ending its life with a single strike. After killing two more Orcs, he finally had enough Mystic Energy to buy the [Deflect] skill.

Before he could open the list, an Orc sneakily brought its battle axe down on him.

Vyral struggled to block the blow with his sword, but the impact was simply too strong. He skidded several meters across the ground before crashing into a nearby tree.

Well, that was why he hadn’t chosen to buy the [Block] skill even when he had enough Mystic Energy. Simply put, when blocking an Orc’s attack, the aftershock was still a huge problem to deal with. Therefore, if he used the [Deflect] skill, it would be a much better option.

Vyral struggled to his feet and glanced at his trembling hands.

’’Shit.’’

He looked up at the NPCs fighting the Orcs for a second before opening the evolution list.

Without hesitation, he bought the [Deflect] skill.

Vyral rushed back into the chaotic battle, but this time, things were different. He deflected the enemies’ brutal, violent blows with ease. The aftershock from their attacks meant nothing to him now.

And once their attacks became useless against him, they were nothing more than fish on a chopping block.

The tide of battle began to shift toward the humans, but as the fight dragged on, they realized there was a major problem.

More and more Orcs kept coming at them.

Why did the Orcs keep appearing?

Vyral was certain that at this rate, if they couldn’t figure out a way to deal with this problem, their defeat would be inevitable.
