Chapter 15: Dawnreach Academy

’’Fortunately, I’ve already sorted everything out.’’

Vyral nodded to himself, thinking about better things. He had upgraded the [Earring of the Moon], so now he could receive 0.007 Mystic Energy per minute while offline.

’’0.42 Energy in 1 hour, 10.08 Energy in 24 hours. Very good. No need to rush to log in.’’

Although he said so, he still wanted to sign in right now to take the dungeon core and complete his mana core. Moreover, there were still the rewards from the deity’s mission he hadn’t claimed yet.

Now, though, he understood how much it depended on his gaming helmet. Indeed, his situation was common among scavengers, if not better, since he had a grandfather with wide connections.

A dozen hours later, Polly opened the steel door, revealing himself along with two big rats in his calloused hands.

At first sight, Polly immediately charged at Vyral and gave him a tight hug.

’’Congrats. You really cleared the opening dungeon.’’

He could tell thanks to sensing Vyral’s mana core. Despite only having a half-completed mana core, it was already quite good for scavengers, whose failure rate in the opening dungeon was always around 70–80%.

’’So, what was the difficulty level of your opening dungeon? I’m guessing it must’ve been easy mode. You’re so lucky. Ah, but that makes sense. After all, you’re my grandson.’’

He added joyfully, finally throwing out the series of questions he had been holding back before. According to the scavengers’ superstition, asking newbies too many questions before entering the opening dungeon always brought bad luck.

’’What’s your race? Don’t tell me you’re a beastman.’’

Vyral scratched the back of his head slightly and gave an awkward smile.

’’More or less like that.’’

He didn’t want to say too much. After all, he found it hard to believe it.

A goblin clearing an opening dungeon in hell mode? What an absurdity.

’’It’s fine.’’ Polly chuckled before preparing lunch — two big rats. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

As for the gaming helmet, Polly said he would have to drop by his friend’s place again, just like before.

One day later, while Vyral was doing push-ups, the sharp sound of rapid knocking suddenly rang out

Polly frowned, walked to the door, and opened it. A man wearing clean, tidy attire — the kind more fitting for the rich city than a deprived zone — stepped inside.

Polly and Vyral stared at the man with alert looks for a few seconds before relaxing. The man showed no hostility or ill intentions toward them. Moreover, the insignia on his clothes belonged to Dawnreach Academy, the place that professionally trained superhumans who would lead humanity toward a brighter future.

Still, it was hard to believe a recruiter would come to such a wretched zone. It had to be a mistake.

But no.

’’Are you Vyral Carlson? Goblin race?’’ the recruiter asked while checking the information displayed on the virtual screen projected from the device on his wrist.

Vyral answered,

’’Yes, it’s me.’’

The recruiter narrowed his eyes as he assessed Vyral’s potential as if observing a book’s cover. At first glance, Vyral was nothing special in his eyes — just another shitty scavenger like the others. A few seconds later, he let out a disappointed sigh. Even so, he still carried out his mission.

’’Vyral Carlson. You have been recruited into a new program at Dawnreach Academy. Based on your achievement of clearing the opening dungeon on hell mode, you meet all the requirements to join the training program. Please follow me. We’ll depart immediately.’’

Vyral frowned in disbelief, while Polly’s jaw nearly dropped to the ground. However, Polly quickly regained his composure. He understood what kind of opportunity Dawnreach Academy could offer Vyral — something completely different from the poor zone they lived in.

Therefore, he hurried Vyral to seize that chance without any hesitation.

After that, the two followed the recruiter to Dawnreach City. Thanks to Vyral’s achievement, the recruiter had given them ID cards so they could enter the city without trouble.

The recruiter snorted disdainfully.

’’Once you no longer have the qualifications to stay in the training program, both of you will be sent back to the trashy zone again.’’

Soon, Vyral and Polly arrived at the academy.

The recruiter intended to take Polly to a subsidized housing district, but he refused and said,

’’I don’t belong here. I just wanted to accompany my grandson on this journey.’’

Just like that, he promised to meet Vyral once every month before returning to the trashy zone.

The recruiter led Vyral through the academy’s corridors, where countless classrooms connected to one another. He introduced the academy to Vyral and warned him about a few things, but Vyral quickly realized this scumbag was deliberately trying to bring trouble onto him. Introducing the academy was nothing more than an excuse to hide his ill intentions.

The students inside the classrooms all shot curious looks at Vyral through the glass windows. Most of them wondered why a scavenger could wander around a place meant only for rich, talented, and powerful children.

Of course, the recruiter had intentionally announced Vyral’s race and achievement out loud — clearing the opening dungeon on hell mode. It immediately changed the way the students looked at him — suspicion, jealousy, and a sense of unfairness filled their eyes.

Eventually, the recruiter left Vyral alone in a corridor corner located at the center intersection among the rows of classrooms.

’’Just wait here. I need to report something to the vice principal before arranging a privileged room for a special student like you.’’

Vyral rolled his eyes in annoyance while sitting against the corridor wall. His eyes lowered to the marble-tiled floor as he slumped his shoulders to rest.

Four cameras mounted on the ceiling were all aimed at Vyral at once, as if waiting to capture the moment he would be humiliated.

A few minutes later, when the bell signaling the end of class rang out, waves of students quickly filled the corridors with chatter. Every one of them represented the future of this city.

’’I can’t believe it! A goblin capable of clearing an opening dungeon on hell mode.’’ A charming girl in a neat academy uniform said, staring at Vyral from a distance.

A male student nodded in understanding.

’’Yeah. From what I’ve heard, there are only about 100 young individuals who’ve cleared the opening dungeon on hell mode. Our city has only 20 of them, and they’re all children of major corporations. Of course, there are still special cases, but that shitty scavenger is definitely not one of them.’’

’’Obviously, those geniuses with excellent gene codes and ancient races like elves have such a high affinity for the elements. They can easily throw a fireball to take down an orc Lv.2 without much effort. Or a humanoid dragon that can endure wind blade magic Rank C at Lv.1 without a scratch.’’

’’And him... just a goblin... the weakest, dirtiest one.’’

’’Sure, it must be a joke the professors made to provoke us.’’

’’Tsk. Just check him.’’

A fat student stepped out from the crowd, revealing a handsome yet chubby face. Behind him were three or four subordinates, all of them similarly overweight.

’’It’s Doran Todd. He’s the second son of the chief of security at SIS Corporation,’’ another student whispered.

’’I’ve heard his race is an ancient dwarf. With such a huge background, he should’ve cleared a hell-mode dungeon if he had been chosen.’’

Another student shrugged, his voice carrying a hint of jealousy.

’’Well, it’s not a big deal to him. I saw him in the special class yesterday. Looks like he used his connections, to get into that class without needing the usual requirements.’’ freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Some students nodded bitterly.

Vyral’s ears perked up as he heard information about this fat guy’s identity standing in front of him.

But even so, Vyral felt no fear. Having been bullied many times in the past, he had enough experience to handle someone like this.

’’It doesn’t matter.’’
