Chapter 4: Chapter 4 - Accusations

Lilith stepped out of the throne room and searched for Solomon. She needed to retreat to her bedchamber to come up with new plans and know if she had lost anyone on her side. freёwebnoѵel.com

"You!" Thalia’s high-pitched voice caught the attention of everyone outside.

Thalia stormed over to where Lilith stood, her eyes still filled with tears. She reached for Lilith’s throat, wanting to strangle her.

Lilith moved out of Thalia’s path unexpectedly, causing Thalia to miss her and stumble. She was not in the mood for Thalia’s antics.

Thalia balanced herself and turned around, even more upset than before. In her eyes, Lilith was the cause of the castle’s ruin. Her father had even said it before he was brutally killed.

"You got our father killed!" Thalia yelled, pointing her finger at Lilith.

Solomon stepped forward to protect Lilith, and seeing this, Arthur went to his sister’s side.

Arthur grabbed hold of Thalia so she wouldn’t appear so weak before the enemy. As Beauforts, they had to keep their heads up and hold their pride even when they were afraid and outnumbered.

Arthur held onto Thalia, keeping her back from a fight. Still, he eyed Lilith, both disappointed and angered by how unfazed she was. "Our father was killed, yet you don’t show any sorrow."

"Where was your sorrow for me when our father tried to kill me? I’m all out of pity and the ability to mourn," Lilith replied, facing the siblings. "I find our father’s death to be disappointing. Unsatisfactory."

Arthur shouldn’t be surprised by the way Lilith spoke since she was never properly welcomed in the family, but still, their father was dead. Only someone without a heart would not feel any grief or regret.

"He is your father," said Arthur.

"Yes, he was. He no longer breathes, so you must correct how you speak of him," Lilith said, mocking her father’s death. "And not long ago, I could have been killed by him. Like you were silent then, be silent now."

Arthur shook his head, affirming what he always knew. "You were never one of us," he said.

"A fact I celebrate. Solomon, escort me to my bedchamber," said Lilith.

Thalia couldn’t believe Lilith would be able to walk free. She was so close to getting rid of her father’s mistake.

This day was meant for Lilith’s head to roll, but it was the true Beauforts who fell.

Lilith truly was a bad omen.

The rotten apple in the family.

"Father was right about you. You betrayed us. You accepted a deal with Duke Mortimer. Did you offer to welcome him to your bed? I always knew you would be a whore just like your mother," Thalia said, not a bit surprised by Lilith’s betrayal.

Thalia has seen this betrayal coming, but her father would never listen and kept Lilith in the castle. This one mistake led Lilith to think she was truly a royal and deserved a place at her father’s side.

Thalia had more to say, but a figure moving caught her attention. Her voice became stuck in her throat as Cassian exited the throne room.

Cassian peered down uponThalia, not hiding his disdain for her.

Thalia was always too chatty, and with how she treated Lilith, Cassian saw no need to keep her alive.

Thalia cowered behind Arthur, shielding herself from Cassian’s gaze.

"Princess Lilith is not to be addressed as a whore. Anyone who insults her will have their head placed on a stake. Perhaps I should take the little princess to a whore house for her to see what one looks like," said Cassian.

Thalia gasped, horrified by Cassian’s suggestion.

Arthur stepped more to the right to block Thalia from Cassian’s gaze. "My sister will not become anyone’s pet."

"Pet? I offered to give her a tour, not the experience. Be careful not to fill my head with ideas," Cassian said, challenging Arthur with his gaze. "You’ve always been pathetic, just like your father."

Arthur gritted his teeth. It angered him to listen to the man who slayed his father insult him.

"You bastard! He was your king. He treated you well!" Arthur yelled, tears streaming down his face. He couldn’t keep his composure for long.

Cassian chuckled, amused by Arthur’s childish outburst. "Was sending me off to every war and reaping the glory, treating me well? You’re just as foolish as your father. I should put your head right next to his on a stake."

"Brother," Thalia cried, tugging on Arthur’s shirt to get him to stop.

"Useless," Cassian insulted the siblings. "You’re only bold to others weaker than you. Aside from Princess Lilith, place the Beauforts in the dungeon. I will decide their fates tonight."

Thalia’s eyes widened after hearing the dungeon. She had never set foot there. "Brother," more tears fell. "I would rather die than be placed in the dungeon-"

"That can be arranged," Cassian said, holding out his hand for a sword.

"No!" Thalia screamed and frantically looked around to see if anyone was approaching her. "I want to be placed in my bedchamber, just as Lilith has been offered. I am a princess as well. A legitimate princess."

Why should a bastard get special treatment over a princess with a pure bloodline?

Lilith stood off to the side, watching the interaction. She once thought Cassian and Arthur had been close, but she was wrong.

’Why am I special?’ Lilith wondered, still suspicious.

Thalia could also be considered for queen, and considering that Thalia had been closer to Cassian before this day, it made no sense for Cassian to ask Lilith to be his queen.

Lilith’s brows furrowed as she gazed at Cassian. For the first time, she struggled to read someone’s motives in the castle.

Before Cassian could set his attention on her, Lilith turned her back to him, leaving to return to her bedchamber.

Cassian eyed Solomong before his gaze fell on Lilith. His men parted for Lilith to walk through the crowd of soldiers, as he had made it clear that she was not to be touched by anyone else.
