Chapter 17: Chapter 17 - Teasing
"Must you always be so cold with me, Princess?"
"If you bother me, yes. I have been ignoring it, but you are to address me as your highness," Lilith said, unable to bear the casual address.
"Your guard has addressed you as princess," Cassian said as he buttoned up his trousers.
"You are not my guard, are you? Don’t be jealous of those close to me, or we shall have a very short marriage. It is time you returned to the castle so we can have a proper talk," Lilith said, turning away from Cassian to have a more pleasant sight.
"Don’t you want to stay out here? The water is warm enough for you to have a dip. I will stand guard and stop others from gazing at you," Cassian said, succeeding in getting Lilith’s attention.
Lilith turned around, her gaze going to the murky water. "My interest in this place died a long time ago. My father used to take his pureblood royal children here and leave me out."
Lilith drew closer to Cassian, her eyes going to his chest. "I will admit that jealousy and anger consumed me, so I put something in the water. What was it again?" Lilith asked, placing her finger against her chin as she pondered. "Oh, yes. It was leeches. You might want to get some fire."
Lilith poked at Cassian’s bare chest. "It seems you don’t know all my secrets."
Cassian reached to hold Lilith’s hand, but she pulled it away. "How did you find and place leeches in the water?"
"I am a princess. I can get the servants to do it, and when the other royal members have been unkind to them, it is easy to convince the servants. Look at you, so eager to undress," Lilith said, amused by the sight of Cassian removing his trousers.
Cassian worried, not about the leeches, but about the story. Lilith had never spoken of this during the two years they were married.
"Oh, wait. Was it this water or another? I can’t remember," Lilith said, playing coy. "They used to have fun in so many places without me. My mistake, Your Grace. It wasn’t here that I placed them."
Cassian licked his lips. He should have known better.
"You just wanted to see me get undressed again," Cassian assumed, his fingers resting on the buttons of his trousers. He smiled, ready to strip again.
"Don’t flatter yourself. The castle is full of men, and every once in a while, they are indecent. If I want to stare at a man, I merely have to go where the knights gather. Now, follow me," Lilith said, leading the way back towards the castle.
Cassian smiled, amused by the interaction. He buttoned his trousers as he followed Lilith so as not to miss a second with her.
The further they walked, Cassian realised who had been so foolish as to take Lilith out of the castle.
Lilith walked by Eric without offering a word to spare him from Cassian’s anger.
Solomon returned to Lilith’s side, inspecting her appearance.
At the very least, Cassian had not been brute enough to touch Lilith.
Eric cautiously approached Cassian, keeping at an arm’s length between them. "I didn’t want to bring her here, but the princess is-"
"I know," Cassian interjected, his eyes fixed on Lilith. "She is not one to back down, but the next time she asks to go out of the castle, stop her. Kill her guard, and tie up if you have to. I don’t care if she says she wants to see me."
"I promise I will not fail you a second time, Your Grace," Eric said, bowing his head. "The body you left behind has been disposed of. Are there more lovers of the princess that I can expect you to kill?"
"She’s a princess. There’s always a man eyeing her, but there is no threat for now. You have been ensuring that the men get rest, have you not? They are to have shifts in guarding the castle," Cassian said, placing his arms behind his back.
"Yes, the men have been resting, especially now that the castle is settling down. If this is about the man who snuck into the princess’s chamber, I assure you last night’s incident won’t be repeated. I’ve increased the number of soldiers around her chamber," said Eric.
"More heads will be placed on stakes if the soldiers don’t do their duties. Fortunately, after tomorrow night, we shall share a chamber," Cassian said, yearning for the days to go by quicker.
"If I may. The princess before us is not in love with you. In fact, I get the feeling that she is plotting to kill you when she no longer needs you. Are you certain you wish to sleep beside her?" Eric asked, worried Cassian would be killed in his sleep.
"She will try to kill me, but I will share a chamber with her." freeweɓnøvel.com
Eric stared at Cassian, bewildered by how easily Cassian could dismiss Lilith’s plan to kill him. The thought returned about Cassian having lost his mind.
Eric looked ahead, fearing what Cassian would do to him if he were in the wrong mood.
Eric sighed, forced to go along with Cassian’s plans, though he had his doubts. "If the princess kills you, it will make life difficult for those loyal to you. I could be beheaded or imprisoned. Think not only of yourself, but of your loyal subjects."
"You want the princess to live and achieve her dream. That I can understand, but I want to live as well, and at the moment, you seem to view me as a pawn. You don’t even care about your own well-being," Eric said, worried that Cassian was on a dangerous path.
"Your loyal servants want to see you live. Now that I have let my feelings be known, I will go speak to the men again. Excuse me," Eric said, bowing his head.
Cassian lingered back, watching as Eric stormed off.
For the moment, Eric’s feelings didn’t matter. The soldiers were in good hands, but they didn’t understand his plans, so they had questions at every corner.
Cassian’s intentions weren’t to hurt anyone who hadn’t helped lead to Lilith’s demise. They simply didn’t matter now to have his full attention.
"Your Grace," Lilith’s voice snapped Cassian out of his thoughts. "Must I get Solomon to hold your hand to lead you?"
"Your Highness," Solomon spoke, objecting to the offer.
"No. I’m with you," Cassian replied, continuing to follow Lilith.
