Chapter 13: Chapter 13 - Death

"Her last breath ended within my arms. I won’t let past mistakes repeat and lose her again," Cassian said, relaxing his hand. "In this timeline, Lilith will live. Even if I have to burn this kingdom to keep her alive."

Eric was too stunned to speak at first. He didn’t think Cassian’s interest in Lilith was so serious.

"Was it an illness...or murder?" Eric questioned, surprised by the revelation. He played along to hear more of the tale. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

"Her rebellion collapsed without allies, and when they caught her, they didn’t kill her outright. They broke her instead. She was beaten rather than killed," Cassian said, wishing he could forget the bruises on her body.

Every attempt by the Beauforts to kill Lilith had eventually caught up to her.

"So, that is why you were in such a hurry to return. You saved the princess from being beaten. But wait, I heard her father ordered her to be killed. Did it change?" Eric wondered, uncertain how it all worked.

"There have been some changes. Because I saved her and she stayed in her bedchamber, someone sneaked into her chamber to kill her. That didn’t happen before," Cassian said, realising there were consequences to changing events.

Cassian knew well what major events would take place, but the small details that changed concerned him.

"I don’t know how this works, and I am still convincing myself it is true, but it seems you shouldn’t change too much or there will be other events leading to the princess being harmed," Eric concluded.

Eric sighed, relieved he had an explanation. "I understand why you have been so quick to execute her family and others loyal to the king."

"For your sake, this is all you are to know for now," Cassian said, keeping other tales to himself.

Eric folded his arms. "You won’t tell me what became of me?"

"No. You don’t need to know," Cassian said, leaving Eric to pout.

Eric followed Cassian, desperate to hear his future. "You must tell me. She might be your wife, but I have been at your side since you could walk. I don’t need to tell you about who I marry. Just say that it is well."

"Have the men stand guard. The nobles are restless and can attack at any moment. Keep an eye on Princess Thalia. She cannot slip away from our grasp," said Cassian.

"You wound me. I am your dear friend, yet you won’t tell me about my future."

Cassian stopped and turned around to face Eric.

For a split second, Cassian’s patience snapped as he raised his hand to grab Eric, but he restrained himself.

Cassian lowered his hand. "Lilith’s future is all I care about. So far, I have caused one drastic change to her life. I would not like to ruin your life."

"Ruin? That means it becomes good. Thank goodness," Eric sighed in relief.

Cassian shook his head, letting Eric enjoy the pleasant feelings while they lasted.

"Leave me," Cassian ordered Eric.

Eric bowed his head, no longer keeping up with Cassian’s pace.

Cassian continued to the bedchamber he had claimed for himself. Upon entering, a figure rose and rushed to Cassian’s feet.

Cassian looked down at the cat he had saved from sharing the same unfortunate fate as its owner.

"She must be searching for you," Cassian said, picking up the white cat.

It had slipped his mind, but after walking by the gardens, Cassian remembered the stories Lilith had told him of loving a cat she fed in the castle.

Alongside being beaten by her father, another punishment was to have everyone and every animal Lilith ever loved sent to their death.

Cassian set the cat back onto the floor.

Until the castle was calm and he was certain the small creature had cheated death, it needed to remain hidden. Even from the person who loved it most.

Cassian walked to the balcony to look out at the castle.

This was what Lilith wanted.

Cassian closed his eyes, but soon opened them as the memories of Lilith taking her last breaths in his arms were vivid in his mind.

Cassian leaned forward and gripped the balcony wall as he suppressed his emotions. Lilith was alive and well. She wasn’t dead and pleading for him to save her.

The memory of Lilith gasping for air and clinging to his arm haunted Cassian from the very day he came back to this time. Two years of marriage had been given up, to return to the time before Lilith challenged her father.

Cassian could protect the kingdom, attacking as George’s sword, yet he couldn’t protect Lilith when she needed him most.

Cassian peered out at the kingdom. He remembered how good Lilith was to the people, but she didn’t get any thanks in return. When George ordered her death, the townspeople cheered it on.

Cassian’s eyes darkened as a sinister plot to kill everyone in the kingdom plagued his mind.

If the kingdom were burnt to ask, Cassian never had to worry about anyone harming Lilith.

"It must be simple," Lilith’s voice was heard.

The thought went away after hearing Lilith’s voice.

Cassian’s brows furrowed as confusion settled in his mind until he looked down to the pathway below his bedchamber to find Lilith walking with her guard.

"Only important guests are to attend," Lilith listed her ideas.

Lilith freely walked around the castle, planning a wedding that hadn’t happened in their other life.

Cassian smiled, a warmth coming back to his chest just from seeing Lilith.

To rid himself of the memory of Lilith dying, the only answer was to make better memories with Lilith now.

Cassian yearned to be at Lilith’s side to hold her, even if she would point a dagger at his throat. He welcomed it.

Cassian welcomed Lilith hurting him as long as he held her attention.

Cassian stared at Lilith, watching the direction she was heading, before leaving the balcony to join her. He didn’t enjoy the moments he was away from Lilith.

One day, Lilith would understand his behaviour.

Cassian did not ever wish to be away from Lilith, even in death, so he had claimed his own life to follow her, hoping to be together in the afterlife.

Some powerful force must have taken pity on them to give them a second chance to be together.
