Chapter 10: Chapter 10 - Weapon

"Get out of my chamber. Find some other lady to obsess over. I am not one to care for these little games. I’d rather you kill me than toy with me," said Lilith.

"I apologise. My approach since my return hasn’t been the best to sway you, but I have been honest about my feelings-"

"Men falling in love with women they hardly know is only acceptable in fairytales. This isn’t some book where you can obsess over me, and I will fall in love. We have never been close enough for you to care so deeply for me," Lilith said, wishing the act would stop.

Lilith looked away from Cassian. "I am tired of men like you who do nothing but play games. I am serious about the castle while you take it and my hand for a joke."

"My father tried to force me into marriage, and now you are doing the same. What is it? Do you want me as your prize? For you to parade me around as your trophy for taking the throne?" Lilith asked, certain there was another reason. "What is it?" fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

"None of them is the answer. I conquered the castle and killed the king, all for you. You think I don’t know you, but I have been close to you far longer than you can imagine," said Cassian.

"Unless I struck my head and lost all memories of us speaking, we were never close. For your sake, let us say I lost my memories. If I remember everyone but you, then you weren’t very memorable. You were insignificant. Useless," Lilith insulted Cassian.

"Nothing you say will hurt me, Lilith. I’ve experienced a pain out of this world because I lost someone dear to me before, and there was nothing I could do about it until now."

"What does that have to do with me? I am quite used to facing men like you. Let us understand one thing. You mistook obsession for love. I will never make that mistake. If you think standing here will sway my feelings, you should give up," Lilith advised Cassian.

Cassian placed his arms behind his back, hiding his nails digging into his flesh. "If not for marriage being the best way to protect you, I would take this slowly, but time is ticking. The Beaufort name is weakening, and others will come."

"My name will offer you protection. Though you want it, if I walk away from the throne and let you have it with no strings attached, you won’t last long when your enemies attack," said Cassian.

"Marry me," Cassian proposed. "I will be your guard, not your king. Your husband, not your captor. I will shield you from anyone who picks a fight with you. I will ensure you live a long life."

"You speak as though you are quite certain that I am going to die," Lilith noticed.

"Can you see the future?" Lilith taunted Cassian.

"Perhaps," Cassian responded.

Lilith frowned. "Don’t you know people who claim to know the future and other crafts are often hung? Go on and speak of it a little more so the people can hang you. It will be one less man for me to worry about."

Lilith sighed. "I want to rest, and this talk only prolongs it from happening. I will move to another bedchamber in the morning, but you cannot stay here. You’re a duke. You know how this all works."

"Are you afraid of others assuming you worked with me to kill your father?"

Lilith’s low chuckles filled the chamber. "Why should I be bothered? My father tried to kill me today. No, he ordered me to be stripped and killed. Only a fool would mourn his death. If others think my lack of remorse is guilt, then so be it."

"They will talk regardless," said Lilith.

"More guards will be placed at your door and below your balcony. That is the only way I will allow you to rest here. Are you certain you can rest here while there will be blood on your floor?" Cassian asked, sparing a glance at the dead man.

Lilith’s lips curled upward. "I will sleep well knowing the blood of the man I killed stains that floor. It will serve as a notice to anyone who tries to kill me. Now, can I have the body moved in peace?"

Cassian turned his attention back to Lilith. He wasn’t comfortable leaving her where she had been attacked, but Lilith was stubborn.

Though he was in the position to order Lilith to leave the bedchamber, he was already off to a bad start. Ordering her to leave would make her hate him even more.

"I will take my leave now and send my soldiers shortly," Cassian informed Lilith.

"You will send your soldiers who just returned from war, and stormed the castle with you, to stay awake to protect me? They will be as useful as placing maids to guard my door. Why don’t you stand there?" Lilith suggested, curious how Cassian would react.

"I should," Cassian considered. "Who better to protect you than me? I will stand guard all night long. If you need me, call for me."

Lilith stared in disbelief as Cassian walked towards the door, opened it, and left.

Just as the soldiers were tired, Cassian had to be tired as well. After all, Cassian was the one leading all the attacks.

"He’s lost his mind," Lilith muttered.

Lilith stood still even when the door opened, and Solomon walked in to check on her.

"I will move the body and clean the floor. The maid will come to dress you. Princess?" Solomon called, uncertain if Lilith heard him the first time.

"I wonder if I can tame that man even just for a moment," Lilith wondered as she stared outside the door at Cassian, who argued with his soldiers. "I’m a little too intrigued to not try it."

"I’m curious what else I can get him to do while he thinks he is in love with me," Lilith said, interested in making Cassian her weapon.
