Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - The Duke Returns
"Marriage... or death. Choose."
The second princess, Lilith Beaufort, lifted her head, facing the sword meant to end her. The blade was placed directly before her, less than a fingertip away from her eyes.
Her mother’s face flashed in her mind, making the decision an easy one.
Lilith held an unyielding gaze. "I choose death," she answered, her voice echoing in the halls.
Lilith faintly smiled, intentionally angering her father.
Silence fell on the throne room as the onlookers awaited the king’s verdict.
"She’s stained our bloodline," Princess Thalia Beaufort stepped forward. She eyed her half-sister with contempt. "It is the result of bedding a maid and having a bastard. Let the sword remove the one flaw in our family."
"Silence!" King George’s voice ran through the throne room.
George peered down from the throne at the daughter who always defied him.
Lilith was George’s only illegitimate child. His affair with her mother was one he regretted to this very day.
George stood up from the throne.
All the nobles awaited Lilith’s fate.
"You choose death?" George said, peering down at the sorry excuse for a princess. "Then so be it. Strip her! Whip her before you kill her and display her corpse for the kingdom to see what happens to those who defy my orders."
Lilith looked to her right at her loyal guards. Now was the time to move.
She waited too long to dispose of her father.
"Kill her!" George’s order roared through the throne room. He raised his hand, commanding the guards to move.
The flames on the torches flickered as cold air filled the throne room.
Before Lilith could launch her own attack, screams filled the castle.
The executioner stood still, the sword yet to pierce Lilith.
As silence fell upon the room, the clashing of metal was heard outside. The cries of men calling for help were heard before they went silent.
The throne room darkened as death crept inside.
The doors burst open, revealing the massacre on the other side.
A figure marched forward, followed closely by others.
Castle guards had fallen as Duke Cassian Mortimer led his men into the throne room. His armour was drenched in blood, but what stood out to Lilith was the head Cassian carried in his hand.
Lilith slowly stood up, forgetting about her impending death.
Upon closer look, Lilith recognised the severed head.
It was the very man her father wanted her to marry.
Lilith’s brows furrowed as she couldn’t understand what occurred at first.
Why was her father’s most treasured pet creating discord in the castle?
"What is the meaning of this?" George asked, lifting his robe to cover his face. He almost vomited at the sight of the head dangling in Cassian’s hand. "That is Lilith’s betrothed."
"Was," Cassian said, tossing the head.
George stumbled back as the head came towards his feet.
The corpse’s eyes were open, and the lips parted, stuck mid plea for his life to be spared.
It was a gruesome death. One which caught the poor soul by surprise. freewēbnoveℓ.com
George looked up at Cassian, angered that he dared to stray away from his orders. "You were to bring him here after returning from the war."
Cassian ignored George, his attention fixed on Lilith. The corners of his lips lifted slightly, but he wasn’t met with a warm welcome.
Lilith glared at Cassian as she now understood his plans.
The king’s known pet was now biting his master’s hand.
No, he was going to kill his master, and her father didn’t see it coming.
Cassian walked by Lilith, putting his interest in her aside for now. He brushed by George, who reached for his hand.
"What is the meaning of this?" George asked, demanding an answer.
Cassian stopped to acknowledge the coward of a king, but soon found himself distracted. He stared at the executioner whose blade was still pointed at Lilith.
Cassian shoved George out of his path and raised his sword, aiming for the executioner’s head.
Screams filled the throne room just before the sword fell. In one swift, powerful motion, another head rolled to George’s feet.
George panicked, afraid he would be next. "Guards! Seize him!" He yelled, his hand trembling as he pointed to Cassian.
Before, it was Cassian whom George commanded to protect his family.
Cassian continued on his path to the throne. "They won’t fight for you. Don’t you see the fear in their eyes?"
Cassian stopped before the throne, taking a look at the chair which granted power. He turned around to face everyone in the throne room before taking his seat.
Cassian placed his right leg over the left, making himself comfortable.
Lilith dug her nails into the palm of her hand, annoyed that she would have to fight another bastard for the throne.
"You!" George became flustered at Cassian’s audacity.
Thalia moved to stand behind her guard, afraid that she too would be killed today. She looked for her brother, the crown prince, and found him surrounded by guards.
"You are a duke," George reminded Cassian. fгeewebnovёl.com
"I was. Now, I am your king," Cassian declared.
Cassian looked beyond George to a very upset Lilith. He spoiled her plans.
Little did Lilith know that he had saved her.
Cassian slew every guard in his path and was willing to set the kingdom on fire all for one woman.
Lilith glared at Cassian, her eyes shooting imaginary daggers in his direction. This was her moment to defy her father and slay him with an attack she had long prepared.
Now, Lilith was faced with another obstacle in her path.
"Princess."
"Back down," Lilith said, looking over her shoulder at her guard. "There is a change in plans. Tell the others to stand down."
Lilith faced the throne where Cassian continued to eye her with a smile. "What is that bastard doing?"
Cassian smiled, enjoying how Lilith looked at him. Though she yearned to kill him, Cassian was happy to see Lilith. All of this was for Lilith.
"The princess does not look pleased," said Eric, Cassian’s loyal guard.
"She hates me. Good. She’ll keep her eyes on me," said Cassian.
