Chapter 40: Ch 40: Saintess’s awakening

"Darn it! These people have no intention of helping the teacher. What should we do now?"

Seraphina asked as she clutched her staff in her hand. She was not the best fighter, but she still wanted to help Kael out.

The other two beside her looked much more confident, and Iris pulled her sword over her shoulder before rushing toward the horde of monsters.

"Isn’t it simple? We drag Kael out to safety and then let the temple handle these monsters. You both just focus on your safety. Leon, you help me create a passage for Seraphina. Seraphina, you use those runes on you to break Kael free."

Iris made a quick plan that had a good chance of working.

She might not have a lot of world knowledge, but her knowledge when it came to fighting was unparalleled.

The other two had no reason to oppose her, and they nodded before following after her. Their plan was simple - break Kael out and then throw the situation at the temple to deal with.

It was not a flawless plan, but it still worked.

Iris was swift as she cleared the path, and Leon also managed to keep up.

Seraphina felt a pang of envy as she watched them fighting to clear the way for her. She wanted to fight as well to keep Kael safe.

Rather, she wanted to be the only one who kept Kael safe so that she could receive all his praise and also-

’Now is not the time for this. I need to free Kael.’

She made it to Kael in no time, and his pale face made her frown. She immediately released him from the binds of holy power, and he stepped aside before they could bind him again.

"You...what are you three doing here?"

Kael questioned, but he did not seem as startled to see them as Seraphina had thought he would be.

A hundred excuses immediately appeared on her tongue, but none of them made it past her lips. What did make it past her filter was the truth.

"We are here to save you. Please come with me."

Seraphina told him as she held her hand out, and Kael let out a small laugh before placing his hand in hers.

His hand was bigger than hers, but not by as much as it usually felt. Even Kael’s face looked soft, and Seraphina suddenly realized that Kael was not that much taller than her.

In fact, she knew that he was only one year older than her. But his mannerisms made him feel so much older that she had been unconsciously seeing him as someone else.

But seeing Kael like this made Seraphina’s heart skip a beat. It made her want to protect him as well, just like he had protected her and Leon before.

’I...what is this feeling? My heart is beating too fast, and I think my head is also too hot. Am I getting sick again?’

Seraphina questioned as she led Kael out. She was too busy with her own thoughts to notice the monster coming her way.

But Kael did, and he tried to use his last rune to protect her. But it was too late.

The monster was too close, and they would not be able to get away in time. And that was when Seraphina felt warm blood splatter across her face.

It felt warmer than her own face...

It felt like it burned her skin as it touched her, and she wanted to pull back. But her hands would not let go of Kael’s injured body.

"Teacher, no-!"

Leon noticed the monster as well and dealt with it, but it was already too late. The injury had already been inflicted by then.

"T-Teacher...? Kael...?"

Seraphina’s voice sounded hoarse and barely audible. Her head was spinning, and her whole body felt like it was burning.

The body in her arms felt too light and too heavy at the same time. Nothing was making sense, especially Kael’s injured body.

"H-Hey, stay with us! Kael, don’t lose consciousness. Seraphina...! Seraphina...your nose! You are bleeding as well. We need to get you to safety."

Iris was panicking as well as she rushed toward them. The anti-magic spell around them was starting to lift, but that did not matter at this point.

All that mattered was that Kael was injured, and there was no way to know how badly and-

’I need to save him. Why is this happening to him? I won’t allow him to slip away.’

Seraphina was panicking badly. She was clutching at her hair and trying to pull at the roots.

"Seraphina, pull yourself together. Kael will be fine. His magic will make sure he survives...until we get help."

Leon yelled, but Seraphina heard his voice through a filter.

A healer? Help? When would someone arrive? There was no guarantee that anyone would even come. The temple had already made it clear that they did not want Kael alive.

So what could she do?

[You want to know what you can do? Well, there is one way. But it would change your life. You might no longer even be able to stay beside your dear teacher for your whole life.]

A voice suddenly spoke in her mind, and Seraphina jolted as if she had been snapped out of a dream.

It was such a familiar voice that she did not even hesitate to trust it.

’I...can help teacher? Then I want to do it.’

Seraphina was determined to help Kael at all costs. Even if it ended with her life on the line, she was willing to take that chance.

[Hmm, are you sure? What about your freedom? Are you willing to sacrifice that as well? Or what about your body? Are you willing to give it to me?]

The voice asked, and Seraphina hesitated. Was she really ready to make such a decision?

But the body in her arms shivered, and Seraphina instantly knew that her decision had already been made.

"I...will make any deal if it means teacher gets to live. So make sure you honor your side of the deal as well."

Seraphina whispered, and the thing inside her mind decided to take a translucent form in front of her.

[Very well. I can see that you are determined. And don’t worry. You and I have the same goal this time - to make sure ’our’ teacher stays alive. Let’s cooperate to make that happen.]

The creature pressed its lips against Seraphina’s before sinking into her body...and then holy power erupted from her like no one had ever seen before. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

The priest who came to help them looked startled by this new development.

"N-No way! Is that...the awakening of a saintess? How is that possible?"

And just like that, a new saintess was born.
