Chapter 37: Even in Death
Kaden’s POV
The trip back onto the private jet was filled with suffocating silence and burning anger. Soon enough, the plane lifted off, flying high above the clouds as we began the thirty-minute flight back to the Full Moon Pack.
I sat in my large leather seat, staring blankly out the window at the endless grey sky. A few feet away, Logan sat quietly, watching me with a worried look. The silence in the cabin was heavy, full of questions neither of us wanted to say out loud.
Finally, Logan broke the silence.
"Alpha King..." Logan began carefully, leaning forward. "What do you plan to do with her body?"
"I don’t know," I snapped, my voice rougher than I meant it to be. "I have no idea."
I rubbed my aching head, my mind spinning into a chaotic mess. It was the absolute truth. I didn’t know what I was doing anymore. All I knew was that something deep inside my soul—something wild and demanding—completely refused to let me leave her dead body in that yard. My wolf was pacing back and forth in my head, his low cries echoing in my mind, totally unhappy.
For a quick, crazy moment, a thought crossed my mind that made my blood run cold.
I wished she wasn’t dead.
I know how silly that sounds. You all must think I’ve completely lost my mind. Why the hell should I be wishing her back to life when she is the very person who ruined my life? She was supposed to deserve death. I spent days wanting her to die. But looking at the cold reality of it, looking at how empty and broken I feel right now... I just can’t explain it. The hatred I held on to for so long suddenly feels like a total lie.
Logan spoke again, his voice pulling me out of my dark thoughts. "Alpha King... do you plan to give her a burial?"
"No," I growled angrily, my hands squeezing into fists in my lap.
"What then?" Logan pressed, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied my tense posture. He took a slow breath, choosing his next words very carefully. "Pardon me, Alpha King... but you are acting strange. Were you... were you developing feelings for her?"
The question hit me like a hard punch. A wave of intense anger and denial flared hot in my chest, trying to hide the sudden panic that gripped my throat. Feelings? For a prisoner? For a murderer?
"Shut up, Logan!" I snarled, my heavy Alpha aura flaring up to push him back. I stood up quickly, unable to handle the weight of his stare. "You know what? When we land, ask the guards to just throw her in the woods. Get rid of her."
Logan instantly went stiff, recognizing the dangerous edge in my voice. He bowed his head quickly, stopping any more questions.
"Yes, Alpha King," Logan nodded quietly.
I turned back to the window, my jaw clenched tightly as the jet began to come down toward the royal palace.
The jet smoothly landed on our private runway, the tires screeching against the hot ground. As the plane taxied to a stop, my chest felt tighter with every passing second. The door of the jet finally lowered, and the cool morning air rushed into the cabin, but it did nothing to clear the heavy fog in my head.
I stepped out first, my boots hitting the stairs with a heavy thud. Down on the tarmac, a black SUV was already waiting for us. But what made me freeze at the bottom of the steps was the tall figure leaning against the car door.
It was Kane.
His face was hard, his eyes tight with anger he wasn’t trying to hide. The moment he saw me, his shoulders went stiff, his eyes locking onto mine.
Behind me, Logan came out of the jet. He turned back toward the cabin and signaled the royal guards. "Carry her down," Logan ordered quietly. "And prepare to take the body to the northern woods."
The moment those words left Logan’s mouth, Kane’s face changed to pure anger. He stormed forward, his boots slamming against the ground as he pushed past me, heading straight for the guards who were just stepping out of the plane with Rebecca’s blanket-wrapped body.
"What did you just say?!" Kane shouted, pointing a finger at Logan. "The woods? You are going to throw her to the wild animals?!"
"It is the Alpha King’s order, Alpha Kane," Logan replied quietly, though his eyes darted to me, waiting for me to step in.
Kane turned on me, blocking my path.
"If you hate her so much, then give her body to me," Kane said, his voice deep and demanding. "I will take her to my own pack territory and bury her myself. You don’t have to throw her away for the vultures to feed on."
Hearing those words come out of my brother’s mouth made something hot and ugly spark deep inside my chest. Give her body to him? He wanted to take her away? He wanted to be the one to care for her, to bury her.
A sudden, sharp wave of jealousy hit me so hard it made my blood boil. The thought of Kane touching her, taking her to his territory, and owning her final resting place completely enraged my wolf. She was my prisoner. She belonged to me. Even in death, the thought of another man—even my own brother—claiming her made me want to tear the world apart.
"Out of my way, Kane," I growled, stepping right into his space, my eyes flashing pitch-black with warning.
Kane didn’t back down, but I was already turning away from him, my jealousy completely overriding the cold orders I had given just minutes ago on the plane. I couldn’t let him have her. I wouldn’t.
I looked directly at Logan and the guards holding her body.
"Change of plans," I commanded coldly. "Take her back inside. Place her back in her room." freēwebnovel.com
Logan’s eyes widened in total shock. Even Kane froze, staring at me in confusion as the guards quickly turned around, carrying Rebecca’s blanket-wrapped body straight toward the waiting SUV to bring her toward the palace.
"Alpha King?" Logan questioned, stepping forward. "Are you sure?"
"Move her now," I snapped, my heavy Alpha aura flaring so hard that Logan had to bow his head immediately.
I marched past Kane without another word, my fists clenched tightly at my sides. I told myself I was keeping her body just to spite him. But deep down, as I watched the guards carry her back into my palace, all I knew was that I couldn’t let her go. Even in death.
